Today, the students were given a behavior contract by Mr. Salvestrini. I ask that you please read over it with your child, and both of you can sign it. Please remind your child to bring it in tomorrow - if 100% of the class brings it back tomorrow, the whole class gets extra recess per Mr. Salvestrini's reward!

In class today, I shared a Moon Phase Rap with the students. It is a fun way for students to learn about the phases of the moon as well as remember them. Have your child share it with you!

I am also adding a Moon Phase Rock - very similar, but better photos and a little better information as well!

Thank you very much to all of the parents that were able to come last night to Open House! I genuinely enjoyed meeting you all. I look forward to a wonderful year working together for our students!

This week we:
*Learned "fix-up" strategies for when we get confused when we are reading. We can ask ourselves 3 questions..."Does this make sense?", "Does this sound right?", "Does this look right?"
*Learned the difference between a "watermelon idea" and a "seed story" - practiced writing details like in the movies!
*Learned about exponents, practiced the all-partials method, and practiced math facts in Math.
*Learned about the Lunar (moon) phases, eclipses, and other parts of our solar system in Science.

A couple of things for parents...
Tonight is Open House! Hope to see you there! It starts at 6:30 PM.

Don't forget to sign up for October conferences at mysignup.com/hineconferences!

Over the last few weeks we have:
*Had the Book Fair, Spirit Day, and Ice Cream Social
*Learned about All-Partials Multiplication Method
*Practiced our reading and learned to think while we read (wonder, picture, connect, etc.)
*Learned about the weather and seasons in Science.
*Learned writing strategies for when we can't think of what to write. The class created Expert Lists, wrote about important people and places and their lives, and learned how to write a seed story.
*The class took the Fall DRP.
*Mrs. Hine bought a house!

The year has been off to a great start! Enjoy the last day of "Summer" today, and get ready for Fall!

In the first week of school we learned many new things! We discussed how our classroom was run, we came up with our classroom expectations, and we talked about how to use our materials.

In Science, we learned about the five senses and the Scientific Method. The class even had the opportunity to perform their first experiment - the Great Egg Drop experiment! It was a lot of fun, and I think the class enjoyed hypothesizing whether or not the egg would break. If you are curious, ask your child!

In Reading, we started with learning how to have Reader's Workshop, and how that will look in our classroom. We discussed how to choose Just Right books, and how to use our classroom library. It has been fun to read their reading inventories, and get to know more about my class as readers!

In Writing, we learned how to set up our Writer's Workshop and how to set up our Writer's Notebooks. The students were able to personalize their notebooks, and even wrote their first paper, "So Long Sweet Summer". It was a letter to summer, telling it how they will miss it.

In Math, we worked on Standard, Expanded and Word form for numbers. The class did a wonderful job learning the difference. We also discussed place value, and how the value of a digit changes based on where it is placed. We practiced our multiplication and division facts as well, with a Math Inventory.

Overall, I think we learned a lot and enjoyed learning!

Today was a fantastic first day of school! I so enjoyed meeting each one of you, and learning more about you. I hope you had fun learning about our classroom and how it will work this year!

Let's all remember that we are "reaching new heights" together here in 5th grade!

This is the first newsletter you recieved in the mail - I'm putting it here for reference!

Dear Parents,

I hope this letter finds you and your family having a wonderful summer.  I am looking forward to meeting your child. We have a great class! With school starting in a few weeks, you might be thinking about what your child might need in the way of school supplies.  To avoid buying things that are not necessary, please only buy what I have listed on the enclosed supply list. I would appreciate it if your child could have these supplies on the first day of school. Your child should carry a backpack or a book bag, which can be hung up in their lockers. I am also including our list of specials, so your child will bring or wear sneakers on the correct days, and have a smock, ready for Art, to be kept in their locker.

Each day your child will have a morning snack time. Please give your child a nutritious snack for this time – NO foods high in refined sugar, please! I am requesting this because some children react to sugar in a way that interferes with their ability to pay attention and learn. Please save the sweet snacks for after school. Also, please don’t send any snack that lists peanuts, peanut oil, or peanut butter as an ingredient. Children will not be allowed to eat them in class. Under NO circumstances will children be permitted to share snacks, so please be diligent about sending your child to school with a snack each day. Fifth grade will be eating lunch at 12:55 P.M., so they will surely need some nutrition between breakfast and lunch!

Enjoy the rest of the summer. Please let your child know that I am very excited to be teaching them this year, and that I look forward to meeting them. I know it is going to be a great year! Thanks for your cooperation and continued support.

Fondly,
Mrs. Jessica Hine
